Self-study Skills & Tips

Use of visual aids

Incorporate visual aids, such as tables, charts, or graphic organisers, to help you organise and visualise information. Use colour coding or markup techniques to emphasise important details.

Break down the task

Break down homework or study material into smaller, more manageable tasks. Create a checklist or to-do list to track progress and provide a sense of accomplishment.

Using multi-sensory techniques

Engage multiple senses while learning. For example, read information aloud, record a lecture, or use gestures for hands-on learning.

Provide structure and routines

Establish a consistent study routine with designated study times and a quiet, organised workspace. Use visual schedules or timers to help manage your time efficiently.

Use assistive technology

Leverage assistive technology tools such as text-to-speech software, text-to-speech software, or digital organising tools to aid reading, writing, and organisation.

Practise active reading strategies

Encourage active reading techniques, such as highlighting key points, underlining or taking brief notes. Pause periodically to summarise or reflect on what has been read.

Developing note-taking skills

Practise effective note-taking strategies, such as using bullet points, abbreviations, or visual organisation. Provide guided note templates to help structure information.

Practice and reinforce

Incorporate regular review sessions to reinforce learning and improve long-term memory. Use flashcards, quizzes or online interactive tools for review.

Seek clarification and ask questions

Encourage students to ask questions and seek clarification when something is unclear or difficult. Foster a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking for help.

Break down complex concepts into simpler terms

Simplify complex concepts by breaking them down into simpler terms or associating them with specific examples or analogies.

Practice self-reflection

Encourage students to reflect on their learning, identify effective strategies, and make any necessary adjustments. Help them identify strengths and areas for improvement.

As a reminder, please remember that it is important to personalise learning strategies based on each student's specific needs and learning style. Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of these techniques and make any necessary adjustments. Additionally, collaboration with teachers and support professionals can provide additional information and strategies tailored to student learning needs.
